From the earliest day of immigration Australian authorities were vitally concerned with saving lives from the many shipwrecks around the continent, but it took the Australian Gold Rushes of the 1850’s and 60’s with increased shipping disasters to stimulate the manning of Lifeboats at points along the South Australian and Victorian coasts.
Lifeboat stations were established in Victoria in the late 1850’s at Portland, Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Port Albert & Port Phillip Heads.
