“The Anatomy of Nelson’s Ships” by C. Nepean Longridge

When one remembers that a first-rate line-of-battle ship was over two hundred feet long, with a beam of fifty feet and was constructed entirely of timber, one is lost in admiration of the technical skill of their designers and builders.
They carried mountains of canvas and they had to stand up not only to the weather but also to the guns of the enemy. They all did this successfully, but not for long as their life was comparatively short.
