The American Fishing Schooners 1825-1935 by Howard I. Chapelle

The American Fishing Schooners have now gone out of existence, except for one or two vessels preserved as museum exhibits.
During the last sixty years of their evolution, as sail-driven commercial craft, they were admired at home and abroad for their sailing qualities, seaworthiness and beauty.
While much has been written about these fine schooners and their crews, their development has been described in only a fragmentary fashion, with but a small number of examples shown. This has led to a very limited knowledge of the development in design of these schooners during any period of their existence.
The objective here is will be to illustrate in plans and to describe in detaIl the typical vessels of each period of development, so far as available information permits.
